I Ate and Started Counting

This message is for every evening ending with the accounting instead of the eating, for so many years that the accounting has started to feel like the meal

The last mouthful goes in and the counting starts, and it starts so fast that the two things are almost one motion.

He is at the low table with the lamp on it, and the meal is over, and it was a good meal, and if you asked him what was in it he would have to look at the board to check. There is flatbread torn on the board. There is a bowl of dates. There are two glasses still half full and nobody has cleared anything and nobody is in a hurry, and his aunt is still talking with her hands about a thing that happened at the market, and the boy is lying on his stomach on the rug listening with his chin on his fists.

And inside him, under all of that, a ledger has opened.

Three things done today. Four things not. The one he said he would do on Sunday, still not. Tomorrow, seven, and two of them are the kind that will move to the day after, they always do. The thing he should have said to his brother. The letter. He is not agitated. That is what is strange about it, and it has taken him years to notice: he is perfectly calm while he does this. It is not anxiety. It is bookkeeping. It is the tallying of the day into a column, and it happens every single evening at exactly this point, the moment the food is gone.

He has done it so many nights that it has become, without his ever agreeing to it, the actual event of the evening. The meal is the thing before the counting. The people around the table are the room the counting happens in. He would not say that out loud and he would be embarrassed if somebody said it to him, but if you asked him what he does at the end of a day, honestly, that is it. He counts.

And here is the small terrible detail. He could not tell you what the food tasted like. Not because it was not good. He was there, his mouth was working, he made the right noises to his aunt about it. But he was already three or four items into the column by the second mouthful, and a man cannot taste a thing he is not present at.

His aunt finishes the market story and everyone laughs, and he laughs too, half a beat behind, which nobody notices except him.

The lamp is going. The dates are there. Somebody has put more tea on. The evening is, by any measure a person might use, good, and it is happening, and it is happening around a man who is doing arithmetic.

Maybe that is your table tonight, or your counter, or your tray in front of the television. And maybe you have not noticed in years that the counting starts on the last mouthful, or maybe you have noticed and have no idea what a person would do about it.

Look at the order Moses put it in

There is a line in Deuteronomy that people quote as an instruction about gratitude, and if you read it slowly it is doing something else entirely.

And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.Deuteronomy 8:10

Watch the order. Eat. Be full. Then bless. Three movements and they are in that sequence, and the sequence is the teaching. The blessing sits downstream of the fullness. It is what a fed person does, afterward, out of the fullness, and it is not the toll you pay to get to the food.

I want to make that unmistakable, because a great deal of religious advice runs the sentence backwards. It tells you to be thankful so that you will be content. It puts an audit at the front of the evening. God does not. He says eat, and He says be full, and only then does He say anything about blessing, and He never once suggests that the meal was conditional on the person's accounting being in order first.

You are not required to settle any column before you are allowed to be full. I am not being generous with you on God's behalf. Deuteronomy 8:10 puts eating first and fullness second and blessing third in that order, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes an old sequence and unbuckles a ledger off a man at a low table.

And notice what the blessing is for, in that verse. For the good land. Not for the day's output. Nobody is being asked to justify their evening by what they produced in it. The thing being blessed is a place they were brought into and did not build, and the good land is doing all the work in that sentence.

You have been fed tonight in a place you did not build, and the counting was never the price of admission to it. It is written that you shall eat and be full and then bless the Lord for the good land He has given, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that arrive as permission rather than as another instruction.

What the counting has been for

Let me tell you what I think the ledger is, and I want to be careful with it, because it is not a vice and I am not going to treat it like one.

The counting is how a person asks permission to have had an evening.

Somewhere back there, you learned that a day has to be justified. Not by anybody cruel, necessarily. It may only have been the shape of the house you grew up in, or the work you have done for twenty years, or the simple weight of being the one everybody relies on. And so at the end of every day, before you will allow yourself to have been anywhere, you run the column, and if the column comes out well enough you get a moment of something like peace, and if it does not, you carry the deficit into the next day and start there.

It is not laziness that keeps that going. It is diligence, pointed at the wrong thing. And the reason it hurts is that it is untiring: the column always reopens, because there is always tomorrow's seven, so there is never an evening that gets to be finished.

Now put that beside the verse again. Eat, be full, bless. Nobody in that sentence is asked to account for the day. The land was given. The food is on it. The order of operations has no audit in it anywhere.

You are allowed to be at this table without a reckoning, and it is already settled, and it was settled long before you sat down tonight. Deuteronomy 8:10 has God putting fullness before blessing and never once putting an accounting in front of either, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a sequence in an old book land on a man doing arithmetic under a lamp.

And consider who the column was ever going to satisfy. Not the people at the table, who have not asked and would be sad to learn it existed. Not you, because the totals reset at midnight and always have. The ledger has been kept for a reader who never turns up, in a room where the actual company is talking with her hands about the market.

You were never being assessed at the end of your days, and the column you have been running was not asked for by God. Scripture puts the good land in the sentence as a gift already given, and His Spirit is the One who quietly closes a book a person has been keeping since they were young.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at the low table, with the lamp going and the dates still out.

You are fed tonight, and it is already finished, and it does not need the day's arithmetic to be balanced first. Deuteronomy 8:10 runs eat, be full, bless, and never once makes the meal wait on the ledger, and the Holy Spirit is the One who serves that word to somebody who has been counting since the second mouthful for eleven years.

And now let me say the part this whole page has been walking toward, because I do not want you to mistake what I am handing you. I am not giving you a practice. I am not asking for a habit, an evening routine, or a discipline you will feel bad about on Thursday. This is one evening. Tonight. If the counting is back tomorrow at the same moment, that is not a relapse and it does not cancel tonight, and I am not going to be marking anything.

You have this evening as a gift and not as a test, and nobody is going to grade how it went. It is written that the land was given and the fullness comes before the blessing, and His Spirit is the One holding that open over you for the length of one meal, tonight, with nothing owed afterward.

So take it. Not as a new way to do your evenings. Just tonight: eat, and then stay in the chair a moment with the plate in front of you, and be full, and let the blessing come afterward if it comes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the table, with the plate still in front of you. The standing to say them is not something you earned by a good day: it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the seat at this table is His and you are sitting in it. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying the words, not the state of your column. The mountain here is the verdict that says you have not earned this evening, so speak to that first, and then turn and speak to God. Whatever He does with tomorrow's list is His, and I leave the outcome to Him. What is settled is that the order runs eat, be full, bless, and you are at the first two.

  1. Ledger I open at the end of every meal, you are not the evening and you never fed anybody. Deuteronomy 8:10 puts the eating and the fullness first and the blessing after, and I am staying at this table tonight with you closed.
  2. Verdict that I have not earned this evening, you were never entered by God, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls it a good land He has given, and His Spirit is the One who gave it, not the one auditing what I did with today.
  3. Lord, You are the One who says eat first and be full first, and You are feeding me at this table tonight, exactly as Deuteronomy 8 says. I thank You that Your Spirit is not waiting on my accounting, and I am staying in the chair, and I am tasting it.
