Enough TonightPsalm 3:5

The List I Say to Nobody

This message is for ending every evening by saying the list of what is unfinished out loud to an empty room

The last thing she does every night, after the last light in the hall, is stand in the doorway of the front room and say the list out loud.

It is not a long ceremony. Ninety seconds, maybe two minutes. She stands with one hand still on the switch and she looks at the window, which at that hour is mostly a black rectangle with the room reflected in it, and she goes through it.

The thing about Tuesday. The form that has been on the counter since the eleventh. The call she did not make again today and has now not made for nine days, which is long enough that making it has become a separate and harder thing than it was. The cupboard door that catches. The person she owes an answer to. The thing she said last week that she has not been able to put down since.

She says them out loud. That is the part she would not tell anybody about, and it is the part that matters. She learned young that if she thinks them silently they come back at half past two, so she says them into the air, in her ordinary voice, at ordinary volume, the way you would read a list to somebody standing in the kitchen.

Except nobody is standing in the kitchen. Nobody is standing anywhere. The house is empty in the specific way a house is empty at that hour, and the room takes the list the way a room takes anything, which is to say it does not take it at all.

Then she says, right, and turns off the light, and goes up.

She is not a frantic woman. If you met her you would say she was steady, and you would be right. There is no drama in this at all, which is why it has run for eleven years without anybody noticing, herself included. It is just the shape the end of her day has. Say the list. Turn off the light. Go up. Lie down with the list still going, quieter now, underneath.

And in the morning, every item is exactly where she left it. That is the honest part. Saying them out loud does not finish them, and she has never expected it to. It is not superstition and it is not a system. It is closer to what a person does when they need to hand something over and there is nobody there to hand it to, so they put it down on the nearest flat surface and hope the surface holds it.

She has never once considered that she is doing something with a list every night that has a Person shaped hole in it.

Perhaps that is your doorway. Perhaps you end every evening reciting what is unfinished to a black window and a room that gives you nothing back, and you have been doing it so long that you would not know what else to do at that hour.

The most ordinary sentence in the psalm was written on the worst night of his life

I want to show you a verse that people read at children and never quite believe about themselves, and then I want to show you what was happening around the man who wrote it.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.Psalm 3:5

That is the whole thing. I lay down. I slept. I woke up. It is the sort of sentence you would find on a note left for somebody, and it is one of the boldest things in the book of Psalms, because of when it was said.

The heading on that psalm places it when David fled from his son Absalom. So: his own child has taken the kingdom out from under him. He has walked out of the city on foot with his head covered and his shoes off, weeping, up the hill, with a man walking along the ridge above him throwing stones and cursing him as he went. He says in the first verse that there are ten thousand set against him, and that people are saying out loud that there is no help for him in God.

And in the middle of that night, on the wrong side of the river, with everything unfinished and every item still exactly where he left it, he lay down and slept.

You are held through an unfinished night by the same hand that held a man with ten thousand against him. Psalm 3:5 puts the sustaining in the past tense as a plain report rather than a hope, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line from a hillside that old and stands it in a doorway with somebody's hand still on the light switch.

Notice what he does not say. He does not say the situation resolved. It did not; the worst of it was still ahead. He does not say he had made peace with it, or gotten his thinking right, or worked through the list. He says he lay down, and slept, and woke up, and then he names the reason, and the reason is not himself.

You were sustained through last night too, and nobody handed you the credit for it because it was never yours. The written word says the LORD sustained me and puts the verb entirely on His side of the sentence, and the same Spirit who moved a hunted man to write it is not asking you to explain how you got through the last eleven years.

This is one night, and it is not a practice

Now here is the thing I most want you to hear, and it is the thing that gets ruined fastest by well meaning people.

Psalm 3:5 is a report on one night. Not a routine. Not a system for evenings. Not a discipline he kept up and would like to recommend. One night, on the run, in the open, and the next morning he wrote down what happened.

Nothing on this page is asking you to start something. There is no streak to keep here, nothing to be consistent about, nothing you can fall off. If tomorrow evening you stand in that doorway and say the whole list to the black window exactly the way you always have, you have not failed anything and nobody is counting.

You have tonight, and tonight is the entire scope of what is being handed to you. Psalm 3:5 covers a single evening and a single morning, and the Holy Spirit is not in the business of putting a new obligation into the hands of somebody who already has a list going at half past two.

And I will say the thing about the list itself, because I am not going to do to you what has been done to you before. Nothing here says the list is too long. Nothing here says you should want fewer things finished or care less about the call you have not made. The list is not a character flaw. It is what a person carries who has things and people they are responsible to, and I would not take one item off it if you asked me to.

What is missing from it is not brevity. What is missing is a face.

She says it out loud so it will not come back at half past two, and that instinct is right, and it is the right instinct pointed at an empty room. Words said into an empty room come back, because nothing received them. Words said to Somebody stay where they were put.

You are speaking to a listening Person tonight, and you were never actually alone in that doorway. The written word has David talking straight at God in the sentence before he lies down, and the same Spirit who carried a man's voice off a hillside in the dark is carrying yours out of a front room at eleven at night.

The breakthrough

So tonight, when you get to the doorway, say the list to God.

Same list. Same volume. Same ordinary voice. Do not shorten it, do not tidy it, do not put the small embarrassing item at the end where it will not be noticed. Say the thing about Tuesday and the form on the counter and the call you have not made in nine days, out loud, to the Lord who was on that hillside.

Then turn off the light and say one more sentence, and let it be His words rather than yours: the Lord sustains me. Then stop talking. That is the receiving, and it is over almost before it starts, and nearly everybody keeps talking through it.

You are being sustained right now, tonight, with the whole list still exactly where you left it. Psalm 3:5 has a man asleep with ten thousand around him and names the Lord as the reason, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings that written line into a house at the hour when the window has gone black.

It is already yours. The sustaining was not offered on the condition that you get the list down to a reasonable length, or feel calm about it, or sleep well tonight. The written word puts the verb on God, and the Spirit is not withholding anything pending a better evening from you.

And in the morning every item may still be there, and the list may start again tomorrow at the same hour in the same doorway. That is not a mark against you. You are given one evening at a time, and one is the size God has always worked in. The written word records a single night's sleep and calls it enough to write down, and the Spirit who preserved it is not grading you on how tonight goes.

Declare this over yourself

You are not begging for a hearing and you are not filing a report. You are in Christ, and the standing to speak to God at the end of a day like this one was given to you in Him and does not depend on what got finished. What He does with the night is His, and however He answers, the sustaining is His work and you are the one it is done for. Say these out loud in the doorway.

  1. List I say to the empty room, you are heard tonight and you are not mine to carry to bed. Psalm 3:5 says the Lord sustained him, and I am handing you over at the light switch instead of reciting you to nobody.
  2. Weight that says it all rests on me, you were never true about me. In the name of Jesus I take you off the last light of my night, and I lie down as one the Lord sustains.
  3. Lord, You are the One who kept a hunted man asleep with ten thousand against him, and I am lying down tonight under that same hand. Your word says I laid me down and slept, I awaked, for the LORD sustained me, so I am saying my list to You and then setting it down and going up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
