The front room is so full that two people are sitting on the arm of the sofa, and somebody has put the good lamp on, and there is a plate of something going round that nobody made properly and everybody is eating anyway.
It came through on the Tuesday. The thing he had been asking about for four years, the one he had stopped mentioning out loud because he was tired of hearing his own voice say it, and by Thursday his sister had organized this, and here they all are.
He is glowing. He is not pretending. He has been on his feet all evening, and he has thanked everybody in that room by name and meant it: the friend who made the call, the cousin who knew the person who knew the person, the woman from up the road who kept asking about it every single week for four years when everybody else had politely stopped. He raised a hand for quiet at one point and said, honestly, without any of you this does not happen, and the room went warm and somebody shouted something and everybody laughed.
He thanked the timing. He said twice that it was the right week, that six months ago it would have gone the other way. He thanked the letter and the phone call and the delay that turned out to be the making of it. He thanked luck, and then corrected himself and said not luck, and then did not finish the sentence, and somebody handed him a plate.
And now it is half nine and the room is still going and he is standing by the window with his back half turned, holding a glass of something cold, and there is a splinter in him he cannot find with his fingers.
He does not have a name for it, so let me put one on it for him. He has thanked eleven people and a calendar. He has not, once, all evening, turned around.
Not out of rebellion. That is the part worth getting right. He is not a man refusing God. He is a man who has been aiming at this thing for four years, in the dark, hard, honestly, and when it finally came the aiming did not know how to stop and turn. He wanted it so long that the wanting had a shape, and the shape was pointed at the thing. So the thing arrived and filled the shape exactly, and no one told him there was a hand behind it, and the hand went by like a person passing a window at night.
He got fed on Tuesday and did not notice that he was being fed.
And here is the splinter, and this is what he cannot say to anybody in that bright room. Everybody thinks he is the happiest man in the county tonight, and he is happy, and there is something in him standing at a window with an empty place in it the size of the thing that just arrived.
Perhaps that is your front room. Yours came through and everybody was lovely about it, and you have a list in your head of people to thank and you are working through it properly. And underneath the list there is a splinter you cannot find.
Nobody showed you the hand
Let me say the true thing before anything else, because the version of this you have already heard is a telling off, and this is not that.
You were not wrong to want it. Not for a second, not in any degree. The wanting was clean, the asking was clean, and I will not spend one line turning your four years into a cautionary tale. That is what gets done to people on this subject and it is a cruelty dressed as wisdom. You wanted a good thing. It came. Good.
What happened is smaller and much more forgivable than a sin, and it is this: nobody ever showed you the hand. You were taught to name outcomes. You were taught to name people, and rightly, and you did that beautifully in that room. But naming the Giver is a separate skill, and it does not come by instinct, and almost nobody is taught it. So the gift arrived and you thanked everything the gift touched on the way in, which is honest, and the One who let it go never got named at all.
You are not a person who is too dull to recognize God, and the evening you just had is not evidence against you. John 6:33 exists precisely because a whole crowd made this identical move in front of Jesus and He answered them without one word of contempt, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that answer and hands it to a man standing at a window with a splinter in him.
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.John 6:33
Read the pronoun. He which cometh down. Not it. Not a delivery, not a supply line, not a system that produces bread on request. The bread of God is a He.
That is the whole answer to the splinter and it took Jesus one sentence. The crowd had asked Him for bread, the way their ancestors got bread in the desert, and He did not tell them to want less bread. He told them what the bread actually is, and the bread turned out to have a face and a name and to be standing in front of them.
You have been hungry for a Person the entire time, and that is what the empty place beside the good news is. It is written in John 6:33 that the bread of God is the One who came down and gives life to the world, and the Holy Spirit is the One who turns that written line into recognition for somebody who thought the problem was their own coldness.
The hand behind the letter
So let me name what you were actually hungry for, since that is the thing this whole page is for.
It was not the outcome. The outcome was real, and good, and it did what outcomes do, which is a great deal and then a little less than you expected. Underneath it, running the whole four years, was something plainer and much harder to admit: you wanted to be handed something. By Somebody. Personally. You wanted the moment where a person who knows your name lets go of a thing on purpose and it lands in your hands and you both know what just happened.
That is not a spiritual want dressed up. That is the actual want, and it is the oldest one there is, and it is why an outcome that arrives by machinery feels a fraction thinner than it should even when it is exactly what you asked for.
You were handed something on Tuesday by a Person, and the handing was as real as the letter was. John 6:33 says the bread of God is He who comes down, so the coming down is His action and not a process that happened to work out, and the Holy Spirit is the One who was in the room the whole evening while everybody was thanking the timing.
And notice what Jesus does not do in that chapter. He does not tell the crowd off for eating the loaves. He does not say you only came for the bread, so no bread for you. He says, plainly, that He is the bread, and then He goes on feeding people for the rest of the gospel. The correction is never a withdrawal of the meal. That is worth having in your hands tonight if you have been braced for one.
You are not about to be handed a lesson instead of a meal, and nothing is being taken back from Tuesday. The written word says He gives life to the world, present tense, still giving, and the Holy Spirit is not standing behind you with your four years in a folder.
So here is what is true in the bright room, with the good lamp on and your list of names half worked through.
You are fed by a Person, and He was the one who let go of it on Tuesday, and nothing about your four years disqualifies you from saying so tonight. It is written in John 6:33 that the bread of God is He who came down and gives life, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that sentence into a house where everybody is still talking about the timing.
I will not tell you the reflex is gone. The next good thing may well arrive and you may thank the calendar again before you think. That is a habit and habits are slow and God is not counting. But the thing you were missing has a name now, and you can say it, and naming it is not a performance you have to get right.
And this is not something you have to qualify for, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to turn around and speak came with Him and not with how quickly you recognized Him. You have the standing to name Him out loud right now, in a room full of people or in a hallway on your own. The written word says He gives life to the world and it does not list exceptions, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a sentence said into the air at half nine into an actual meal received.
So receive it. Not once the room clears. Here, with the lamp on.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the room or on the porch, whichever you can manage. The authority to say them is real and it is yours personally, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing was given to you rather than earned by recognizing Him faster. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words. Whatever He does with the next good thing that arrives is His and I leave the outcome with Him. What is settled is that the bread of God is a Person, and He came down, and He is giving life tonight.
- Bright room full of people, you are a good room and you were never the hand that filled it. John 6:33 says the bread of God is the One who came down and gives life to the world, and I am turning around in the middle of you and taking it from Him.
- Verdict that I am too dull to know Him, you were never spoken over me by God, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. The written word says He gives life to the world with no deadline in the sentence, and I am naming Him out loud tonight at half nine.
- Lord, You let go of it on Tuesday and You are the bread that came down, and Your word says You give life to the world and are giving it still. I receive it from Your hand and not from the timing, and I am saying Your name over the best thing that has happened to me in four years.
