Truly FedPsalm 22:26

The Window That Same Night

This message is for standing at a window the same night the thing finally arrived, looking at nothing, unable to explain it to any of the people who were glad for you

The house has been quiet for over an hour, and she is still on the window seat with her knees pulled up under a blanket, looking at a street where absolutely nothing is happening.

I am not going to tell you what came that day. If I name it you will hold it up beside your own and start doing arithmetic on whose was bigger, and that arithmetic is the exact thing this page is trying to walk you out of. It was the thing. Hers. The one she had been asking about for years in the plain, slightly embarrassed way a person asks God for a particular thing.

And it came, that morning, and by noon the phone had started and did not stop. Her sister cried down the line and then laughed at herself for crying. A woman from two doors up came with a dish still warm in a towel and stood in the kitchen saying you deserve this, you deserve this. There were six people around that table by evening, and one of them prayed over the food and got choked up halfway through, and everybody laughed and then went quiet in the good way. She said thank you maybe forty times and meant every one of them. She was glad.

Then the last of them went home. She stacked the plates. She wiped the counter down twice because her hands wanted a job. And then she came up here and sat on the window seat the way she has sat on it since she was nine years old, and now it is half past midnight and her forehead is against the cold glass and she is looking at nothing at all.

Here is what she cannot say to a single person who was at that table. She is not sad. She checked. She went through herself the way you pat down a coat for keys, and there is no sadness in there, and no ingratitude either. There is a room under the room. Something in her stood up after everyone left and walked to the window, because a window is where you go when you are waiting, and tonight there is nothing left to wait for, and the waiting posture came anyway. Her body went and stood at the glass out of long habit, and the habit has outlived its reason.

She cannot explain that to her sister. To say out loud, on today of all days, I am at a window at midnight looking at a street where nothing is happening, would land on those people like an insult. So she says nothing, and the not saying has its own small weight, and she sits there with her palm on the pane because the glass is cool and her hand is hot.

And underneath all of it, quiet as a draft under a door, the question she is most afraid of. If that did not reach the bottom of me, what does.

Perhaps that is your window. Perhaps yours is a car in a driveway with the engine already off, or the edge of a bed at two in the morning. It came. Everybody was glad. And you ended the night at the glass, looking at nothing, with no way on earth to say so to any one of them.

The room under the room

This is a safe place to be honest, so let me say the truest thing first, because most people who arrive at this page have already been handed the opposite by somebody who loved them.

What happened at that window was not ingratitude. It was not a flaw in your character and it is not evidence that you are impossible to please. It was a measurement. Something in you is larger than the thing that came, and the thing went as far in as it could go and then stopped, and what you felt at the glass was the place where it stopped. You felt the floor of it.

Hungry people know this and nobody shames them at dinner. A man eats a good meal on Tuesday and is hungry again on Thursday, and he does not conclude that he has a defect. He concludes that he is alive. Somewhere along the way we agreed that this was true of stomachs and untrue of souls, and that agreement has cost good people whole nights at windows.

You are hungry, not greedy, and the difference between those two is not a matter of opinion. Psalm 22:26 does not say the disciplined shall eat, or the moderate, or the ones who have finally learned to be content. It says the meek shall eat, and meek there is simply the one who comes with empty hands and no claim to press, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line like that and lays it down on the window seat beside a woman at half past midnight.

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.Psalm 22:26

Now read the order of it, because the order is the mercy. They eat first. The praise arrives in the next clause, after the eating, and not one syllable before it. Nobody in that sentence is asked to show up thankful in order to qualify for the meal. They come with nothing, they are fed, and then praise happens the way praise actually happens in real life, which is on a full mouth and never on command.

So if you have been carrying the idea that you needed to fix your attitude before God would come near you at that window, set it down. It was never in the text. You have a place at a table where the eating comes before the praising, and it was written down in that order on purpose. Psalm 22:26 puts the meal in the first clause and the praise in the second, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over you with a clipboard grading how glad you sounded at dinner.

Nobody stands at a window by accident

Look at the last clause of that verse, the one people skim. Your heart shall live for ever. That is not a decoration on the end of a sentence about food. It is the reason the food has to come from where it comes from.

A heart that outlasts the calendar has an appetite the same size as itself. Nothing arriving inside a single day can reach the bottom of a thing made to run past every day there is. That is not a design fault. It is a design note, and it explains the window completely. You were made with a hunger that outlives everything time can hand you, and that is architecture, not appetite gone wrong. The written word says your heart shall live for ever in the same breath that it promises the eating, and the Holy Spirit is the One who joins those two clauses together over a person who thought her own restlessness was a character problem.

Notice what God does with a desire like that. Psalm 145:16 says He opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing. He does not close the desire down. He opens His hand. The desire is being met, not managed, and He is the one who has to open, because a hunger that size was never going to be reached from your side of the glass.

You are the living thing that verse is talking about, and His hand is open toward you tonight while the street outside stays empty. Psalm 145:16 is written and it carves out no exception for people who have already received what they asked for, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries an open hand into a quiet house after the guests have gone.

There is a woman in Genesis who ended up alone by a spring in the wilderness with nobody to explain herself to, and what she said afterward was that God saw her there. Not that He rearranged her circumstances that night. That He saw her. The seeing was the meal, and she named Him for it, and the whole of Scripture kept the name. Being seen at the exact place where you cannot explain yourself is not a consolation prize. In that story it is the entire event.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at the glass, right now, with the dishes done and everybody gone home.

You are fed tonight at a table you did not lay, and the hunger is not what disqualifies you from the meal; it is the reason the meal was set. Psalm 22:26 says the meek shall eat and be satisfied and praise afterward, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that written order into a dark house at midnight where nobody is left to perform for.

I will not tell you the wanting cannot be back at this window next week. It may. And when it comes it is not evidence that tonight did not count, and it is not a verdict on your character. It is a heart that lives for ever, coming back to the only table sized for it, and the table is still there, and He is still the One who opens His hand.

This is not a mood I am asking you to work up, either. It is a standing you already hold, because Christ took you as His own and Christ is in you, and the seat at that table came with Him rather than with your performance at dinner. You have the standing to speak out loud in this room tonight, and it was handed to you in Him and not earned at a table where you said thank you forty times. The written word puts the eating before the praising, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes an ordinary sentence spoken at a window into a meal received from His hand.

So receive it. Not later. Here, at the glass, in the clothes you are already wearing.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the window or wherever you are standing. The authority to say them is real and it is yours personally, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that seat was given rather than achieved. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not how well you have handled your own appetite this week. Nothing here promises the hunger is gone for good and nothing here puts a date on God. Whatever He does with your tomorrow is His, and I leave the outcome with Him gladly. What is settled is that the meek eat first, and your hands are empty, and the meal is on the table tonight.

  1. Window at midnight, you are where the eating happens tonight and not where my gladness ran out. Psalm 22:26 puts the meal in the first clause and the praise in the second, and I am taking them in that order, with my hand flat on your cold glass.
  2. Verdict that I am ungrateful, you were never spoken over me by God, and I put you out of this house in the name of Jesus. The written word calls the meek blessed at the table and never once calls a hungry person rude, and I stay here fed and hungry at the same time.
  3. Lord, You are at this window with me and You set the eating before the praising, and Your word says the meek shall eat and be satisfied. I receive what You are handing me tonight, and I am leaving my hunger pointed at You, because it was made Your size.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
