Content In HimHebrews 13:5

They Told Me to Want Less

This message is for being told to be content, hearing it as an order to want less, and never once being shown that the verse gives a reason instead

The one lamp over the table has a scorch mark on the shade from a summer nobody remembers, and she is standing under it with her coat still on.

She has just come back from her sister-in-law's. It was a good evening. Everybody was kind. There was a ham and there were four kinds of pie and there were people talking over each other in a warm room, and on the drive home she was fine, and then she came into her own kitchen and turned on the one lamp, and something went sideways in her chest.

It is not that her kitchen is bad. It is scrubbed and it is orderly and the table is a good table, a hundred years of somebody's family in the grain of it. It is only plain. That is all. And she stood there with her coat on and her keys still in her hand and looked at it the way you look at a thing after you have just been looking at something else, and she wanted. Not the ham. Not the pie. She could not have told you what. Just the wanting, arriving whole, in a scrubbed kitchen at dusk.

And immediately after the wanting, faster than the wanting, came the sentence. She has heard it all her life, from people who loved her and meant it well and were, in their own way, quoting the Bible at her.

Be content with what you have.

She has tried. You would not believe how she has tried. She has said it to herself in this room more times than she could count. She has said it standing right here with the coat on. And she has noticed the thing that never gets talked about, which is that saying it does not work. It does not remove the wanting. It only puts a lid on it and adds a second thing underneath, and the second thing is guilt, and the guilt is heavier than the wanting was.

So she has spent thirty years running a small quiet program: want something, feel the wanting, hear the verse, put the lid on, feel the guilt, keep moving. Nobody has ever seen the program. It runs under everything. It ran through the ham and the four kinds of pie.

Here is what she has never once been shown, and it is not her fault that nobody showed her. That sentence people keep handing her is half a sentence. It is a clause. Somebody cut it in two a long time back and started passing out the front half, and the front half by itself is an order to shrink, and the back half is the reason, and she has never in her life heard the back half read out loud in a kitchen at dusk.

She takes off the coat. She hangs it on the chair. She stands there under the scorched lampshade in her own plain, good room, with an appetite she has been apologizing for since she was young.

Maybe that is you tonight, under your own lamp. You have been given the front half for years. You have been faithful to it. And you are so tired of losing that particular argument with yourself.

The verse has a reason in it

Let me read you the whole thing, because I think you have only ever been read part of it.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5

Look at the middle of that sentence. Look at the word for.

That word is doing all the work and it is the word that gets cut. A for is not decoration. It means a reason is coming. It means the writer is about to tell you what the contentment rests on, and it is not willpower and it is not a smaller appetite and it is not a private agreement you make with yourself under a lamp. The reason is a quotation. He hath said. God said something, and the something He said is: I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

That is the ground. Contentment in this verse is not a discipline you perform on your own wanting. It is what a person is left with when the one thing they were most afraid of losing turns out to be unloseable.

You are not under an order to shrink, and you never were. I am not softening the verse to be kind to you. Hebrews 13:5 puts a for in the middle of that sentence and hangs the whole of it on what God has said, and the Holy Spirit is the One who reads a person the back half of a verse they have been obeying the front half of for thirty years.

And notice what the verse is actually treating as the danger. It is not appetite. It is covetousness, which is a specific thing: wanting a life at somebody else's expense, wanting what is theirs because it is theirs. That is not what happened in her kitchen. What happened in her kitchen was that she saw a warm room and her heart moved, and then she came home and her heart was still moving. That is hunger. It is not theft.

You are hungry, and hunger is not covetousness, and God is not confusing the two even if the people quoting Him did. The written word aims that warning at covetousness by name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who tells a woman standing under a scorched lampshade which word actually has her name on it and which one never did.

Contentment is company, not a ration

So if contentment is not a smaller appetite, what is it?

Read the reason again. I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. That is a promise about company. Not about supply, not about scale, not about the size of the kitchen. About who is in the room.

Think about what actually made her chest go sideways tonight. It was not the ham. She has eaten. It was the warm room with people talking over each other, and then the quiet one, and the difference between them. What she felt was not a shopping list. It was the specific loneliness of coming into a room where nobody is.

And Hebrews puts a Person in that exact spot. Not a lecture about the ham. A Person, quoted, on the record, saying He does not go.

You have company in your kitchen tonight, and it is not the kind of company that leaves when the lamp goes off. Hebrews 13:5 quotes God saying He never leaves and never forsakes, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a quoted promise into an actual presence in an actual plain room at dusk.

Now look at what the writer does one line further on. Because of that promise, he says, we may boldly say the Lord is my helper. Boldly. That is the tone the whole passage is aiming at, and it is nothing like the tone she has been using on herself in this kitchen for thirty years. The verse does not end in a person being smaller. It ends in a person speaking up.

And this is why the lid never worked. A lid is not company. You cannot put a lid on loneliness and call it peace. What the verse offers is not a smaller inside. It is a fuller room.

You were never asked to solve this by wanting less, and the reason is written into the verse itself. Hebrews 13:5 grounds contentment in what God has said rather than in what a person manages to stop feeling, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that ground and puts it under somebody's actual feet on an actual floor.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true, under the one lamp, with your coat still on the chair.

You are handed the back half of the verse tonight, and it is a reason and not a ration. Hebrews 13:5 hangs the whole of contentment on what God has said, and the Holy Spirit is the One doing the handing, not the version of you who has been running the lid program since you were young.

And here is what you receive, and you can have it before your kitchen changes by one single object. Company. Not the promise of company. The company itself, tonight, in the plain room, on the strength of a sentence God put on the record and has never taken back. That is the receiving, and you will notice it does not require you to feel any particular way about your table. It requires you to know who else is at it.

You have a room with Somebody in it, and the wanting you carried through the door is not a stranger He is offended by. It is written that He never leaves and never forsakes, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that the temperature of an actual kitchen rather than a line somebody quotes at you.

I am not going to tell you the wanting is finished. You may drive home from another warm room next month and feel the same thing come up your chest in the doorway. When it does, it is not evidence that you failed at contentment and it is not evidence that tonight did not count. It is hunger, arriving in a room that is no longer empty.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, under the lamp, with the coat wherever you dropped it. The standing to say them is not something you earn by finally wanting the right amount. It was given to you in Christ, and Christ in you is the one the promise was made to, so you speak in Him. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying the words. What He does about your kitchen and your calendar is His, and I leave the outcome to Him. What is settled is that He has said He never leaves and never forsakes, and He is in the room while you read this.

  1. Kitchen at dusk with the one lamp on, you are not a smaller copy of somebody else's kitchen. Hebrews 13:5 says He has said He never leaves and never forsakes, and He is standing in this room with me while the light goes.
  2. Order to want less, you were never what that verse said, and I put you out of this house in the name of Jesus. The written word gives a reason where you gave me a ration, and His Spirit is the One who keeps me company and never the one who trims me down.
  3. Lord, You are here in this plain room and You have said on the record that You do not leave and You do not forsake. I am setting the second cup down across from me tonight, and Your Spirit is the One who makes contentment company instead of a smaller appetite.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
